Happy Birthday

Happy 21st birthday Graeme

Activity day

We held our holiday activity day at church on Monday. It was attended by 38 primary aged children and our theme was journey. All the children had "passports" and they collected country stamps as they travelled round the different activities. They made suitcases out of shoeboxes and were able to use them to carry home some of their work. We heard about different journeys in the bible, had drama workshops, made junk models, cookies, "stained glass" cross bookmarks, prayer feet, planted lettuce seeds and lots more besides. By the time the youngsters were collected from church after our closing worship they were tired, happy and had learnt a lot.

We couldn't have run the day without the help and support of so many different people - those who helped withe the planning and co-ordinating; the administration; helpers on the day; pliers of tea & coffee for the adults and squash for the children; collecters of junk; those who came to help clear up when the rest of us were beginning to flag and the many members of the congregation who held the day in prayer - Thank you to you all.

Wedding Show

I spent this afternoon helping on the Church of England stand at the Wedding Show at Olympia. As usual with these events I had some really valuable conversations with those wondering about the possibility of being able to marry in a church. It was good to be able to help couples understand the various options of which church you can marry in and try to help them make sense of qualifying connections.

We also offered to pray for couples in the time leading up to their wedding (whether or not they were planning to marry in church) if they filled in a card with their names and the date of their wedding and if they wished where they were planning to marry.

It was great to be able to help answer the vast variety of questions we were asked; many didn't have definitive answers but we were able to encourage them to talk to the clergy in the church they hoped to marry to find out.

Several people came over to us and said how pleased they were to see the church having a stand at such an event, that they appreciated our presence and valued the fact that we were there to give out information rather than to do a hard sell.

Friday growth

There's lot's of new growth in our garden and the church garden. It was still very cold and grey yesterday afternoon.

The Trees

The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too,
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.

Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

Dunwich Heath plants

A variety of soggy plants from Dunwich Heath.

The Epistle from the lectionary today was from 1 Corinthians 3 and included verses 5-9

What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labour of each. For we are God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building.

Beach Sculpture

Some people pay a fortune for sculptures. It's amazing what turns up on the beach free of charge; some totally natural, some made by humans and other a bit of a combination.

Dunwich Heath

It was grey but dry when we walked along the beach at Dunwich Heath yesterday, at least it wasn't windy. The sun tried to come out but didn't succeed.

The sun came out just in time for us to be driving back to London so it was in our eyes as we came down the A12.

Treasure in clay jars

For it is the God who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness', who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. 2 Corinthians 4.6-7
